Reasons To Ski Over New Year

Thinking of skiing this New Year? Here are our reasons to ski over new year.

I know it might seem an eternity away but it won’t be long until the New Year arrives, so escape the standard home celebrations and enjoy the resort New Year entertainment. Book as early as possible as New Year is very popular and all the best resorts and chalets sell out quickly.

Here are the reasons why you will want to enjoy a white New Year on the slopes!

New Year’s Eve Celebrations

In each resort, there is always a variety of things to do on News Year’s Eve. From the hardcore party-goers seeking a late night out, to the families who simply want to enjoy each other’s company and an early morning ski, there is something for everyone.

All the resort bars hold their own parties, restaurants often lay on a special menu and sometimes live entertainment. Here is what you can expect on the New Year week:

  • Spectacular firework celebrations
  • Live music and sound show
  • View the giant snow sculptures along the main street
  • Festive street entertainment all day and night
  • Bar/Clubs offering drink specials

Nearly all bars and clubs will be ticket only, so ask around once you are in resort or look online. Here are my top three resort choices.

Val d’Isere

Notorious for the great New Year celebrations, Val d’Isere has a huge variety of clubs and bars that will suit everyone tastes. If you fancy a dance and a late one, Doudoune is the one for you, offering top name DJs, such as David Guetta, Pete Tong and Roger Sanchez. If you want more of a chilled drinks and live bands with friends it has to be Moris Bar.

On New Year’s Day you have the impressive 300km of piste and two glaciers to explore. If you can get the first lift, you will be laughing from the quieter slopes… that is if you can make first lift?

And if you really want to make the most of a week of celebrations, you will need to visit Follie Douce and enjoy the tabletop dancing, champagne popping and live band boogieing. See video for more inspiration.

Meribel

There is something quite special about New Year in Meribel. You have the traditional wintry French village, restaurants lit up with fairy lights and endless bars and clubs. I would say you need to begin your New Year with a spot of apres ski at the Rond Point before watching the torch-lit descent down the Chaudanne run followed by a spectacular firework display! If you want to head out after I would recommend Dicks Tea Bar to soak up the true party vibe.meribel-food-shot

If you fancy treating yourself to a fantastic meal, book yourself in the Blanchot. Main courses range from €20-€35 or a good value for money is the set menu of the day from €28

St Anton

You really are in the heart of Apres Ski with the likes of Mooserwirt and Krazy Kanguruh, where it is packed with table-dancing skiers (experienced first hand!).

After apres, you head back to your catered chalet with your four-course meal prepared all for you before you head down to the streets with 2,000 other locals and enjoy the street party for the countdown. It really is an experience like no other.

If you want to be in the centre of the atmosphere, Chalet Seeberger really is about location, location, location!

FACT! The infamous Mooserwirt sells 5,000 litres of beer a day in the winter season!

New Year Offers

Last year I spent my New Year working with Powder White as a Chalet Host and it was a fantastic atmosphere in resort. We enjoyed our New Year’s Eve skiing in St Anton followed by unforgettable street celebrations with on-slope fireworks, drinks and lots of happy people! It was an experience like no other back in England.

Best Pick Chalet

The Iona chalet is highly recommended for anyone who is seeking an epic start to the year! Picture yourself in a modern yet rustic chalet, with cooked breakfasts and 4-course evening meals, a sauna to enjoy your fizz in and a central location for the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

  • Sleeps: 8 – 4 bedrooms with ensuites
  • Location: Val d’Isere centre with private gates
  • Extras: Sauna, free WIFI, iPod docking station, baby facilities and more.

skye-arran-lona-jura-val

The Iona is in the same building as the Skye, Arran and Jura. So if there is a big group of you, it can be split across the 4 chalets which also sleeps 8 per chalet apart from the Jura that sleeps 6.

White New Year

st-anton-sunshine-mountain

Swap the rain for the snow. Is there anything better than skiing on New Year’s day surrounded by the mountains, your friends and the beautiful white fluffy stuff? I personally don’t think so. With New Year’s Day landing on a Monday this year you can book your holiday from Saturday 28th December and get a few days skiing in the quiet start of January as well.

Make this New Year selfie have fresh powder on top of a mountain – something special to talk (boast) about when you’re back in the office.

So there you have it. Just a few ideas of what to expect if you come and join us in the Alps this New Year. For further information please call on of our holiday experts on 020 8877 8888.
