The Portes du Soleil ski area stretches over 650km of piste across France and Switzerland and remains a strong contender in the battle to become the biggest linked ski area in the world.

Green runEcoles Piste- This is serviced by two very slow drag tows next to a steady and rather flat slope, making it perfect for beginners.

Red run, Arare Sector- your those who are looking for more excitement, drop into some of the longest runs in the Portes du Soleil and some of the steepest in Avoriaz. The ideal playground for the big kids.

Black run, The Swiss Wall- Looking for a challenge? This is thought to be one of the hardest black runs in Europe. Covered in moguls this will be tough work on the legs but very rewarding.

Where to eat

We know how important refuelling is when on holiday in Avoriaz and it does not disappoint on the gastronomy front when it comes to restaurants in the resort.

On the mountain

Le Terrasse  +33 4 50 74 16 17

Situated in the Hamlet of Les Lindarets (in the next valley), you cannot beat the sunny terrace of Le Terrasse. It offers traditional alpine cuisine and a friendly efficient service. We think it’s a perfect spot to have a long lunch on a blue bird day.

La Crémaillière  + 33 4 50 74 11 68

Located in Les Lindarets, La Cremaillere is an old mountain chalet restored and converted into a fine restaurant at 1470m. It offers a great menu, which has something to suit everybody. However, it is recommended to get there early as it’s a real hotspot when the sun is out.

L’Passage  +33 6 77 56 88 83

A super spot for lunch after a morning’s skiing in Avoriaz. Attentive service with excellent local dishes and wine, L’Passage is recommended as a cut above most similar establishments in the area. Slightly more expensive but definitely recommended. Located next to the Super Morzine Telecabine.

Chalet du Nabor +33 4 50 79 02 03

At the summit of the Mouille Chairlift, Chalet du Nabor offers a cosy interior and warming dishes such as the signature Lumberjack’s soup and home-made quiche. Traditional mountain cooking in a great location – a perfect pit stop for lunch!.

Chez Flo  +33 4 50 74 19 94

A great option for skiers and non-skiers alike. Specialities include tartiflette, croutes and fantastic plates of charcuterie. It is advisable to book ahead Chez Flo as it has become a popular place to meet if the children are spending the morning in ski school.

Les Fontaines Blanches  +33 4 50 74 12 73

Offering a great selection of French Alpine dishes as well as a wood-fired pizza oven, Les Fountaines Blanches is not one to be missed. It is more expensive compared to other restaurants in the resort but its location on the edge of the snow is second to none. They also offer a reasonable selection of children’s meals.

Changabang  +33 4 50 38 42 53

Changabang has been a popular hangout in Avoriaz for nearly 10 years. This really has a traditional seasonnaire feel about it, but don’t be put off by the vibe. With an American menu (think big burgers and curly fries!), welcoming staff and cheap drinks, you will probably end up visiting more than once in your week!

La Poya  +33 4 50 74 12 27

La Poya is right on the slopes in Avoriaz and offers a fantastic spot for those who are not skiing to sit and ‘people watch’. The wide menu suits a variety of budgets.

The Wild Horse Saloon  +33 4 50 74 72 29

The Wild Horse offers a huge selection of food as well as a genuine feel of the Wild West and Tex-Mex inspired cuisine. It’s a great option for groups, but best pop in and book a table due to its popularity. Yee-ha!

Where to apres ski

We have taken it upon ourselves to sample the bars of Avoriaz and produce a detailed list of the ones that we would recommend going to; they each stand out for their own reasons, but you better go and test a few to see which you like best…

Le Tavaillon
An English style pub in the centre of the resort with a heated patio, this place is a great place to go for a chat with friends over a few well-priced drinks. It is a quieter option but still retains a pub atmosphere with quizzes and sports.

Le Shooters
There is always a party atmosphere in this popular establishment, with drinks flying and over 50 flavours of shot to choose from. The speciality drink is the Les Metres des Shooters.  Happy Hour is between 4 and 5 pm, followed by a second round between 8 and 9 pm – this is a great bar to let loose.

Le Place
A Danish bar with live music each afternoon and evening.  They feature a different band each evening and the crowd here are very lively. It is easy to spend your week’s evenings here, enjoying fun-filled post skiing partying.

Wild Horse Saloon
Step back in time to the days of the Western. Sip your drinks in this saloon-style bar coated in wooden decor. The barman, or Sheriff of the Saloon, will ring the bell for Happy Hour from 6 until 7 pm.

Other activities…

You may think that the non-skier would be forgotten about in this famous resort. However, there are plenty of activities for those in the group not keen to hit the slopes, ranging from scenic snowmobiles to glacier walking.

Snowboxx Festival

Skijoring means that you can escape the lifts and trek through the woods away from the lifts.  A riderless horse is used which is controlled by the skier.  A rig with reigns is connected to the horse’s bridle and the skier has towed along behind the horse on skis, holding onto the rig.  You steer by using vocal commands and by pulling on lines connected to the horse’s bit.

L’Ecurie des Frasses provide ski joering every day from December to April starting at the neck of the Joux green. You can opt for an introduction course lasting 30 minutes for €30. A ride on a route of about 1 hour will cost €50. Reservation required.
