Top Family Ski Holiday Tips 22/23

Family Skiing can be stressful! Here’s our useful guide on getting ready for your fun on the slopes this winter.

Taking the stress out of your ski holiday

Half Term is just about upon us. And doesn’t it give us a gentle reminder of how organisation is crucial to the whole family’s enjoyment of their time together! Here are some pointers to help you get ready for your well-earned ski holiday on the slopes this winter:

1. Choose your resort wisely

Choose a resort based on the childcare or instruction that you need for your kids. And if you have teenagers, make sure there’s a bit of life for them although bear in mind, the legal age limit for alcohol consumption anywhere is 18. Our recommendations are La Plagne, La Rosiere, Les Arcs, Meribel, Tignes, Les Gets, Courchevel and Alpe d’Huez. There’s a vast selection of options available from all-inclusive Club Med holidays to budget hotels & apartments or catered/self-catered chalets.

Great Value Family Skiing can be had pre-Christmas & late Easter.
2. Be mindful of when you go

Don’t assume that you’re restricted to Christmas, New Year or Half-Term. You’re not! For those in the know, the great value weeks for family skiing are the week prior to Christmas (this year 17th-24th December) or the second week of Easter (8th-15th April). There’s no need to worry about snow. All our resorts will have plenty of skiing and whilst it may be a little slushy on the lower slopes towards the end of the day, what a perfect excuse to finish early and enjoy a chilled beer in the setting spring sun.

3. Pre-book everything

A family’s worst nightmare is arriving at their destination to find there’s no equipment, creche or ski school available. Don’t forget to book these well in advance as well as your resort transfers. Also consider dietary requirements or kids meals – advance notice is everything.

Layers count. A warm child is a happy child
4. Proper Clothing

Be sure to get the right kit before you go. Whether you’re borrowing or buying, think layers, warmth and waterproof jackets. Socks are crucial so only knee-high, non-ribbed ones work. A choice of goggles and sunnies is best and mittens are easier to put on than gloves!

5. Helmets

Whilst not yet compulsory, it goes without saying anyone crazy enough not to wear one is asking for trouble. As young children are still growing, we recommend hiring these and pre-booking in advance.

6. Beginners

This is a tricky one. Do you go to a dry slope or snowdome prior to your holiday? Only you can decide and we would say that for complete beginners, its probably worth one taster session to help with their confidence. Otherwise, don’t do it – too much risk of pre-holiday injury!

7. And Finally…
  • Write a checklist on the back of your front door to go through each morning
  • Give your children a bit of pocket money for a hot or cold drink with their instructor
  • Put your mobile number in their pocket so authorities can contact you in case of emergency (or if they get lost)
  • A warm child is a happy child. A happy child means an overjoyed parent. An overjoyed parent means a wonderful, fun-filled family holiday.

See you on the slopes soon!
